But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as a man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV LifeStone, UGP, Summer Quqrter 2024) Samuel, a prophet of GOD, was sent to Jesse’s house to anoint the next king of Israel. Jesse’s oldest son Eliab was brought before Samuel. When Samuel saw Eliab, he perceived that he would be the next king of Israel. GOD told Samuel “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature…” (v.7) A person’s countenance has to do with their face or facial expression (according to Webster’s New Pocket Dictionary, (c) 2000 Wiley Publishing Inc.). The height of a person’s stature is their standing (or reputation before others). Did Eliab have high, strong cheek bones? Was he handsome? Was he championed by members of the community, or commended by his dad and brothers? Having the favor of people does not necessarily mean that a person would be a good thing. GOD knows the heart.
