And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. (1 Samuel 16:12 KJV LifeStone, UGP, Summer Quarter 2024) David was Jesse’s youngest son. He was in brought in from the field, where he had been caring for the sheep. David may have been the least likely to be chosen, according to man’s standards. David was ruddy (this has to do with red; healthily reddish, according to Webster’s New Pocket Dictionary (c)2000 Wiley Publishing, Inc.) David was not pale, which showed that his blood was circulating (actively flowing). Was David a ‘Runner’? Always on the go (busy)? About his father’s Jesse’s business? David was a “beautiful” person. His inner qualities most likely shined through. The scripture says that David was “goodly to look to”. It does not say “good to look at”. This does not mean that David wasn’t handsome, yet the qualities that you “look to” in a person to be king would primarily be characteristics rather than outward beauty, such as dependability, accountability, responsibility, maturity, honesty, and so on. GOD knew David’s nature, not just what he looked like to others.
