Jesus answered him, if I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head: If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. (John 13:8b,14 KJV Bible, Thomas Nelson 2016)
JESUS washed the disciples’ feet. He showed how we are to serve one another in love. Some may participate in Foot Washing Service. This physical act, I believe, symbolizes the importance of serving humbly. I also believe that it exhorts us to forgive one another.
At JESUS’ trial, before His crucifixion, Pilate washed his hands of the matter. This, handwashing, signified that Pilate desired to cleanse himself (of the responsibility) of the action that was about to occur. (see Matthew 27:24)
Foot Washing expresses that the offender is being washed of the “dirt” (sin/ offences) that is on him or her. It shows grace towards the person that has done wrong. Though a service or ceremony may not take place, we are to wash one another’s feet, by allowing fellow followers the chance to come clean about wrong doing, and not hold grudges.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. (James 5:16a) But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1John 1:7,9)
Thank GOD for the opportunity that we can repent and be forgiven of sins. Thank GOD for cleansing us and healing us, even from relational wounds.
